Spilt Kerosene can attack and damage certain adhesives and plastic building products, such as damp proofing structures and insulation materials, cabling, and plastic piping. It can also have disastrous consequences if it enters controlled waters, such as lakes, or groundwater that may be used for drinking water.

In the event of an oil spill or leak from a storage tank, users should :-

• Extinguish all naked flames in the vicinity of the spill
• Isolate the kerosene source if possible
• Contain the spill, using sand or earth to prevent it spreading
• Ventilate the building if it is an internal spill
• Contact the Environment agency if there is impact to soils or watercourse
• Contact an environmental health officer at the local council if kerosene odours are detected within residential buildings
• Contact OCS with the following information :-
• Exact address and postcode of the spill
• Insurance company and policy number

In most residential cases OCS are prepared to isolate the cause of the leak free of charge until the initial extent of the damage is established. Most household policies will cover this work, and the necessary work involved in restoring the surrounding land to its previous condition. Not all policies cover the replacement cost of the tank, although the cost of fitting a replacement tank is usually far less than the remediation costs.
